To say that the latest Velma hasn’t stuck the landing with audiences would be quite the understatement, with sentiment towards the latest show in the Scooby Doo universe nosediving on what appears to be a weekly basis.

The show appears to be getting review bombed into oblivion by users over on Rotten Tomatoes, with its audience scores sitting at an absolutely abysmal 7 percent at the time of writing. Critics haven’t been able to muster up all that much love for the Velma either, with a far-from-fresh rating of 55 percent.

The mature take on the Mystery Inc crew has fallen supremely short, with half of the one-star reviews dominating the user review page on the aggregator as far as the finger can scroll, with folks labeling the show a waste of time and a needless subversion of expectations, in broad strokes – and using much nastier words.

From the mind of The Office alum Mindy Kaling, Velma dares to gear the familiar Scooby Doo gang (minus the titular dog) towards an adult audience and serves as a glimpse into their lives before said pup entered their lives. While there are still mysteries to be solved, the show dives into much more adult-oriented social commentary.

HBO’s slate for the beginning of the year has turned out to be a bit of a double-edged sword. While Velma has well and truly turned out to be a miss for audiences and critics alike, The Last of Us appears to be sinking its teeth into audiences the world over, with impressions following its premiere episode being overwhelmingly positive.

If you’re curious to find out what all of the literal rage is about for yourself, Velma is currently streaming on HBO Max.
