What happened at the end of ‘Lockwood & Co.’ season 1?

Lockwood & Co. season one has ended and the team of teenage ghost hunters had their hands full with supernatural mysteries that tested their skills and their friendship.

The Netflix supernatural thriller is based on the popular young adult series by Jonathan Stroud, and it’s performed well, receiving positive reviews and debuting on the streaming service’s Top 10 in more than 70 countries. Unfortunately, with Netflix, one never knows what markers it uses to decide to keep the series going, but fans are desperately anxious for a Lockwood & Co. season two confirmation.

Haunted beginnings

The story begins with Lucy Carlisle’s origin story. Her mother sends her to a ghost-hunting agency where she learns to use her supernatural listening abilities to detect ghosts and discover how they died. After a botched mission kills most of her teammates and leaves her best friend comatose, she runs away and joins Lockwood & Co., a ghost-hunting operation that doesn’t have to play by the same rules as the major agencies. The founder and leader of this upstart is Anthony Lockwood, who can see death-glows, and the researcher George Karim and the boys agree to let Lucy join them. Little does she know that things are about to get even more complicated for them.

The team works to solve their first case, the death of Annabel Ward, an actress who was killed under mysterious circumstances and haunts Lucy. Lockwood & Co. take on a job for Sir John Fairfax, the owner of Fairfax Iron owner, to pay off a debt for the government agency Department of Psychical Research and Control (DEPRAC) for burning down a house. They investigate one of Fairfax’s properties to clear it of ghosts and discover that it’s Fairfax and that this was a ploy to destroy the team.

Sweet dreams and beautiful nightmares

Lockwood & Co. get another job working for Sweet Dreams Excavation, a council approved by DEPRAC to assess cemeteries for risky plots. The Kensel Green Cemetary is one of London’s most prestigious cemeteries, known for its perilous plots. The wealthy Bickerstaff family owns it and Sebastian Saunders and Pamela Joplin from Sweet Dreams Excavations are sent to convince the trio to accept the job. They work to clear out the grave and Lucy hears a voice calling her name, distracting her from the task at hand. It turns out that George’s infamous skull can actually speak with her and she can communicate with the rare Type 3 ghosts. Type 1 ghosts are weaker and Type 2 ghosts are stronger, but neither is supposed to be able to speak with the living.

They learn of a mysterious relic, the Bone Glass, and Lockwood & Co. and the Fittes agency are both on the case to locate it. Lockwood discovers that Danny Clough, a mentor of his at his former agency, has died. He looked into the Bone Glass mirror and died, and Lockwood is determined to learn the cause of this. George does research with Pamela while Lockwood and Lucy meet with one of Lockwood’s associates, a relic hunter named Flo Bones. She tells him that parasites got to him because his ghostly talents were fading. His partner was Jack Carver, but Flo warns them against it. Lockwood goes through with it anyway and leaves a note on a posting board for Jack that tells him they know about the Bone Glass mirror.

Criminals and occultists

Flo tells them about the criminal network and how they move their goods. Julius Winkman and his wife live in Bermondsey; they’re antique dealers and if Carver doesn’t kill them, then Flo says that they will. Lockwood refuses to listen and goes to Winkman’s base with Lucy, where he’s captured and tortured. Lucy hides from them and saves her partner by pouring flammable liquid on the dastardly couple and threatening to burn them up. Lucy and Lockwood escape with their lives and return home. Carver arrives shortly thereafter, but when he enters the domicile, he falls to the floor, having been stabbed in the back with an ancient knife. But before he dies, he whispers, “Seven ghosts.”

The skull gives Lucy clues hints as to where to find the Bone Glass at his master’s house at Bickerstaff’s residence, but he’s also misleading her in his attempt to be set free. Lucy goes inside alone, per the request of the skull, and gets locked in the basement with wheezing ghosts, the patients that were killed by Bickerstaff. Lockwood and George save her and find the trapdoor that allows her to escape. Lockwood says she’s not to work alone again, and Lucy decides to put the skull away.

Flo Bones is in the house and tells Lockwood she’s not surprised to learn of Carver’s death. She tells him of a private auction with a high-value relic at Salter’s Landing and they have their next lead. George pieces together that Bickerstaff tested a theory of tying spirits to their sources by inflicting so much trauma that their ghosts were forever tied to their bones. One of the ancient illustrations depicts seven ghosts, a ritual used in the ritual to create Bone Glass.

Secret missions

Lockwood and Lucy go to the Fittes ball and break into the Black Library. They find an important book titled “The Confessions of Mary Dulac” when Penelope Fittes, the boss of the Fittes Agency, and an assassin called the Golden Blade, arrive and talk business. Penelope leaves and the Golden Blade fights Lockwood and Lucy, but they defend themselves using nearby objects and escape with their lives. Lockwood uses the salt sprinklers to cause a distraction and they get out of the party undetected.

Lockwood and Lucy meet up with George and Flo and tell them that they’ve retrieved the Dulac book. They sail to Forthergill’s where Flo has left a hatch to the basement unlocked. Lockwood and Lucy get inside, but they’re discovered very quickly by an undercover DEPRAC agent. The agent informs them that they’re out of their league and Winkman’s cruelty shouldn’t be underestimated. Lockwood, once again, doesn’t listen and wants the Bone Glass.

They go undercover and attend the black market auction where Sir Bickerstaff’s Bone Glass is presented. It’s so lethal that the mirrored surface has to remain covered. Lockwood is discovered and Lucy uses a flare to create a distraction. Lockwood takes the Bone Glass and the two of them race down a hall, but the door is locked. Winkman and his men arrive and the DEPRAC agent breaks open the door and holds the men back for Lockwood and Lucy to escape.

Betrayal

They hand the Bone Glass over to DEPRAC and the two of them return home. Lucy reads the Dulac book and learns that Mary Dulac killed Bickerstaff in a ritual. The “looking glass” wasn’t a mirror, it was a window. The illustration shows the glass having spirals and as they look at the tablecloth, they notice that George has been drawing spirals. George has been hypnotized by the mirror and they have to find him.

George is in the Kensel Green Cemetary cemetery with Pamela and he has the Bone Glass. He never turned it over to DEPRAC, and Pamela tells him that it’s best that he has it because all they do is destroy. They’re not alone though, and Quill Kipps from the Fittes Agency is on their trail. Lucy asks the skull where George is and learns that he’s with Pamela at the cemetery and they go to find him. They put together that she fired Carver to steal the Bone Glass and put a knife in his back when he double-crossed her and took it to Winkman.

Lockwood and Lucy arrive at Kensel Green Cemetery and they’re stopped by Fittes agents. Before they can travel down into the catacombs, Winkman arrives with his team to retrieve the Bone Glass and kill them all. Lucy goes down into the catacombs while the rest stay above and fight them off. The skull tells Lucy that the Bone Glass was made from the bones of seven bodies, suffering souls, trapped in glass to make a window to see the eternal. The way to look is by using someone else’s eyes.

The abyss

George and Pamela have tied up Fittes Agent Quill Kipps to a chair to be forced to look into the Bone Mirror, but when it’s discovered that Kipps is aging out of his abilities, George goes in his place. Lucy offers herself in George’s place, suggesting that her supernatural abilities make her stronger, but when the Bone Glass mirror activates, she uses the skull to stare at it instead. During the confusion, George throws himself at the object and takes it down.

The Bone Glass breaks apart and Pamela grabs it, drawn to its power. The mirror explodes and the seven spirits escape, but it awakens the spirit of Edmund Bickerstaff who appears in the form of a dark cloud, but Lockwood arrives after having defeated Winkman’s forces and uses his rapier to destroy the ghost. Lockwood & Co. escape with their lives and give the Bone Glass shards to DEPRAC to be burned in the furnaces and Winkman is sent to prison.

Lockwood’s secret door

The team comes together in the end, more united than before, having battled through ghosts, criminals, and their personal problems. Lockwood chooses to show them how much he trusts them by revealing what’s inside the secret door that no one is allowed to see. It’s been hinted at throughout the episodes and Lockwood has been adamant about no one knowing. He told Lucy that he was orphaned at the age of six and his past is behind that door. The Golden Blade hints that Lockwood’s parents died under mysterious circumstances, so it’s likely that the room holds remnants from his past, perhaps even the sources that their spirits are attached to.
