Not to sound too defeatist, but it’s getting harder and harder to become emotionally invested in a Netflix fantasy series given the company’s track record of wielding the axe with reckless abandon, but Prime Video won’t allow The Rig to suffer a similar fate.
Mercifully, it’s been confirmed that the supernatural thriller will return, which is just as well when it was running the risk of becoming yet another genre show to end on a cliffhanger teasing more adventures that didn’t fulfill its end of the bargain. Having enjoyed a stellar run in after cracking the Top 10 in almost 100 countries through its opening weekend, it’s clear there’s an audience eager to see more.
The first run of episodes followed the crew of a remote oil rig 150 miles off the Scottish coast, who found themselves walled in by an ominous fog that soon revealed itself to be a great deal more than just inclement weather. Not to dive into spoiler territory, but the stage was set for a much bigger and more expansive sophomore outing, which is now definitely coming.
At a brief six chapters, The Rig was easily digestible and eminently bingeable, and the core concept has plenty of gas left in the tank even if it opts to leave the remaining cast members who made it through to the end behind. Take note, Netflix; if people check out a broad, effects-heavy original in their numbers, then there’s no reason why it can’t be renewed for additional adventures.
