Two years ago now, the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings movie came out. It was a hit, united two big stars in the pairing of Simu Liu and Awkwafina and now, the pair are set to join with DC rival John Cena on a brand-new action comedy.
An article published by Deadline Hollywood confirms the superhero series’ trio will be coming together for Grand Death Lotto over at Amazon. The piece is directed by Paul Feig of Bridesmaids, Minx, and Ghostbusters fame and tells a story about a lottery in an economically-challenged California of the future. Here, you have to kill the winner before sundown to legally claim their prize and when L.A. transplant Katie (Awkwafina) finds herself with the winning ticket, she must join up with Cena’s Noel to make it to sundown in order to win and stay alive – all while having to deal with Noel’s protection service rival Louis.
Grand Death Lotto starts filming next week. Written by Rob Yescombe of Outside the Wire fame, part of the premise is dark, but Feig says in a statement they will be leaning into the humor.
“I love action comedy and extreme physical comedy and this movie has both in abundance, as well as a boatload of heart and hilarity. This lotto will make winners of us all.”
Feig will be working on a sequel to A Simple Favor in the future. As for Cena, Liu, and Awkwafina, upcoming projects they are involved in include Fast X, True Loves and Renfield, respectively. Liu will also get to return for his Marvel machine role in the future, though, now it is not known if Awkwafina will reprise hers, and his hint at an imminent reprisal has fans speculating wildly.
