Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis is showing his true colors when it comes to protecting children by staying silent after the Covenant School shooting in Nashville, Tennessee on Monday.

Since the tragedy unfolded, a handful of politicians have spoken out, either in favor of enforcing stronger gun laws, or sending simple “thoughts and prayers” to the victims. Even Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) found time to say something about the mass shooting and thanked first responders on Twitter.

Meanwhile, other government officials were able to comment on the school shooting. According to CNN, Nashville’s mayor John Cooper called out the dangers of guns and claimed that those are now the leading cause of children’s deaths, saying

“The leading cause of kids’ death now is guns and gunfire and that is unacceptable.”

As for DeSantis, nothing. No word has come out from the man who’s so bent on “protecting children” that he’s passed laws to ban books and targets the LGBT+ due to his conservative ideals. On the contrary, the governor is planning to ease gun restrictions. According to Bloomberg, DeSantis was described as a “gun-friendly candidate” for the upcoming 2024 election. Not to mention, Florida has very few gun restrictions and allows owners to carry without a permit.

For now, it seems like DeSantis believes that guns aren’t to blame, and it’s books, “woke” teachers, and the LGBT+ that are harming children.

The Covenant School shooting took the lives of six people, three of them children. The White House now calls for Congress to take action and pass gun safety legislation. The Covenant Shooting is America’s 129th mass shooting tragedy in 2023.
