With the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie now upon us, audiences finally have the chance to see if Chris Pratt really has ruined their childhoods by voicing the title character. While the movie’s early Rotten Tomatoes scores haven’t exactly been encouraging, Anya Taylor-Joy’s Princess Peach has been singled out as a highlight.
That’s was probably to be expected given that the fast-rising star has been knocking it out of the park in virtually every project she appears in, but the Golden Globe-winning actress isn’t above making a comparison that might leave some people scratching their heads.
When you think of Princess Peach, we’d be inclined to believe that one-armed badass warrior Imperator Furiosa – played by Charlize Theron in the instant classic Fury Road and by Taylor-Joy in next year’s prequel – isn’t the first point of comparison that comes to mind. And yet, The Queen’s Gambit star was adamant there’s plenty of similarities between the two in an interview with Digital Spy.
“I was making Furiosa for Mad Max, whilst doing this. And so I’m like: ‘Interesting.’ It’s bizarre that the two characters in my filmography that have the most in common are Princess Peach and Furiosa. That’s pretty rad. They’re both very good on a bike. Very good on a bike. And have a singular purpose. And will stop at nothing to achieve it. I think that’s as much as I can say without getting into some real trouble.”
While you definitely couldn’t refer to either Princess Peach or Furiosa as damsels in distress, we won’t be able to decide whether or not Taylor-Joy’s unlikely comparison proves to be on the money until the latest chapter in the Mad Max franchise comes to theaters in May of next year.
