Just when you thought a certain generation left infuriated by the news that Harry Potter was being rebooted as a TV series couldn’t get any more pissed off, it’s been confirmed that Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight is in line for the exact same treatment.
It’s time to dust off those Team Edward or Team Jacob t-shirts, ignite those pitchforks, and storm Summit Entertainment headquarters, because plans are tentatively afoot for the sparkly vampire saga to be brought to the small screen. If you weren’t there at the time, then it’s hard to explain the mania people had for the franchise at its peak, but it was wild.
All four films were panned by critics to a large degree, but they raked in billions upon billions of dollars at the box office and spawned a fandom so vociferous that cougars were literally fighting in the streets with teenagers. It was a strange time to be alive, of that there’s no doubt, but can lightning genuinely strike twice?
As of yet, there’s no suggestion of a potential destination in terms of either a network or a streaming service, but the fact it’s happening at all is sure to generate a fair amount of spicy reactions. After all, the response to Harry Potter getting a fresh coat of episodic paint was barbaric to put it lightly, but at least Meyer hasn’t become a rampant transphobe as far as we know.
Expect every major streamer in the game to be circling this one, though, because bringing Twilight back to the forefront of popular culture is a license to print cash if ever there was one, with even the most ardent of opponents destined to check in for the sole purpose of seeing how it stacks up to the OGs.
