The return of Spy Kids to our screens may be imminent. The Noughties children’s classic had us all believing that we too could take on the world with some basic karate moves and a handful of gadgets. Now, with original director, Robert Rodriguez back at the helm, the kids are back and heading to Netflix soon.
It has been over a year since the reboot was announced, and production has since wrapped, making it seem very likely that we would have a 2023 release date. Now Rodriguez himself has given fans an update speaking with Collider at the press tour of his new movie Hypnotic about when we can expect to see the reboot, Spy Kids: Armageddon.
“I don’t know if I can say the release date, but it’s coming, it’s this year. We haven’t announced it yet, but it’s coming this year. I just finished scoring it, so you know, we’re still waiting for visual effects. It won’t be done until August, so it won’t be any earlier than August.”
Though fall is a great time to release a movie, given the child-friendly nature of Spy Kids, Netflix may hold off on releasing it until December when they release many of their family-friendly projects. Not a lot is yet known about this reboot, but we do have the names of those taking over from the original Spy family, with Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin) and Zachary Levi (Shazam!) playing the parental figures whilst Everly Carganilla (The Afterparty) and newcomer Connor Esterson are their children.
Fingers crossed then that we get the film this year, and given Rodriguez’s statement, it looks very likely to be the case.
