It might be the single worst-reviewed of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s 32 feature-length installments to date, but that doesn’t mean old and new fans of the franchise alike aren’t keeping their fingers firmly crossed in the hopes that Eternals ends up getting a sequel.
If it doesn’t, then the intergalactic epic spanning thousands of years will also be anointed with the unwanted distinction of being the only standalone MCU project in the superhero saga’s history that doesn’t wind up with a second installment, even though there are no shortage of options with which to bring back the bounty of new characters who made their debuts within.
For a while, everyone seemed convinced that Kit Harington’s Dane Whitman would make his comeback in Blade, which was a sensible conclusion to reach when Eternals ended with the erstwhile Black Knight uncovering the Ebony Blade in a post-credits scene that also marked the first official appearance of freshly-minted Daywalker Mahershala Ali, albeit in a voice-only capacity.
However, the Game of Thrones veteran has been lining up new projects on a regular basis instead, and the latest is going to sting. Harington will join Aladdin‘s Naomi Scott and Academy Award-winning veteran Jeremy Irons in a romantic epic that’s ironically called Eternal Return.
In short, instead of returning to star in an Eternals movie, the star of Eternals is starring in a movie called Eternal Return. Ironic, confusing, frustrating, and plenty more besides, it’s one of those Hollywood coincidences you couldn’t possibly hope to make up.
