James Gunn is one of the biggest comic book lovers in the industry, so it’s no surprise that his love for the medium runs deep. When asked about his opinions on some underrated DC heroes, the director didn’t hold back.
Mister Miracle and Big Barda may not get as much attention as other names, but that doesn’t make them any less cool. Whilst they’ve never made it big in the mainstream, there are plenty of comic readers who love the pair.
Maybe one day there will even be a live-action film or TV series dedicated to them, although Gunn has made no mention of it yet. One fan decided to ask the head of the DCU himself what his opinion was of the two, and as usual, the filmmaker expressed some pretty strong feelings for them with very few words.
Although he didn’t say much more on the topic, it does give fans hope that we may yet see the characters brought to life on the silver screen someday. Considering how passionate Gunn claims to be about them, it’s a safe bet that he’ll want to focus on both at some point in the DCUs future. We already have a potential candidate for the role of Mister Miracle, as one Army of the Dead star has named the character as his top choice to play in the DCU.
Mister Miracle is the name of three different heroes in DC comics. The original was created by the legendary Jack Kirby. His back story has changed multiple times, but the most well-known iteration of the hero is Scott Free, an escape artist who fights crime. Big Barda was introduced as his love interest, and their relationship was somewhat based on Kirby and his wife’s. The pair are married in the comics, and many readers have been long time fans of their relationship, which clearly includes James Gunn.
Big Barda, also created by Kirby, was born on Apokolips and was originally a member of the Furies, a team of warrior women. However, after meeting Miracle Man, she falls in love. She later joins the Justice League of America and the Birds of Prey, which makes sense considering she’s one of the strongest characters in the world of DC.
So, will we be seeing any loved up superheroes in the DCU? In all likelihood, Gunn will get around to it. He’s frequently shown himself to be respectful and creative with the source material, and he’s certainly well-versed in the world of comics. At present he’s dealing with setting up the heavy hitters in his universe, Superman, Batman, Green Lantern etc. Once things are up and running smoothly, it’s likely that he’ll start bringing out the more overlooked heroes and then we’ll finally get to see Miracle Man and Big Barda’s love story play out onscreen.
