Love Island began in 2015 and since then there’s been a whopping nine seasons, with the latest one wrapping up as recently as March. But with the tenth beginning on Monday, there’s no sign this reality TV juggernaut is slowing down anytime soon and it’s looking increasingly like there’s going to be a spinoff show that’ll delight long-time fans.
Rumors have been swirling for weeks about an “all-star” version of the show featuring popular past contestants, many of who now have burgeoning careers of their own after riding on the post-show wave of fame. Love Island creative director Mike Spencer spoke to RadioTimes.com and hinted that this may be on the verge of becoming a reality:
“I think I said I’d like to do one last year and then everyone started talking about it! I can’t say anything yet but I’d love to do an all stars!”
One big problem here is that the supposed aim of Love Island is to put contestants in long-term stable relationships, though outside of the show these often don’t last in the real world. As such, any “successful” former Islanders couldn’t reappear as they don’t need to find love anymore. Spencer addressed this, saying:
“Hopefully, you know, we’re in talks to do different things. So hopefully we can do an all-star soon. Fingers crossed, but there’s so many iconic islanders that I’d love to see. Obviously, some are in relationships now.”
He went on to name his own dream returning contestant, season 5’s Maura Higgins:
“I had breakfast with her the other day. She’s so funny. She’s amazing, so I’d love to see her on it.”
Egos are already pretty big in Love Island, so we’d expect to see the fur fly if popular past contestants were brought back and told to pair off. By this point, everyone would already know about each other and their tabloid exploits, giving everyone a lot of drama ammunition to fire off when tempers get high.
There’s no word on what this spinoff might happen, though with the pace of the show’s release perhaps this could be coming in early 2024. In the meantime, we’re eager to see this new batch of lovesick fools enter the villa when Love Island season returns on June 5.
