Spider is a new character introduced in the blockbuster Avatar: The Way of Water. He is the only human child in Jake Sully’s inner circle, and his origins were unknown at the start of the film. According to Jake, his kids see him as a “stray cat” who somehow found a place in his family. At the same time, he created a close bond with the Sully children.
As the story progresses, more of Spider’s past gets revealed, and the character is tested on where his allegiance lies. Does he still side with the Na’vi due to his close friendship with them, or will he join the humans due to his origins, especially because of who his father is?
Who is Spider’s dad in ‘Avatar: The Way of Water?’
Spider was introduced as a kid who was left behind when the RDA left Pandora. He was too young to leave the planet, so he was in the care of the remaining humans who were allowed to stay in Pandora since they were allies to the Na’vi. As things progress, more of Spider’s origins get revealed thanks to the return of one man, his father, who’s now revived through an Avatar body.
Miles Quaritch, the antagonist from the opener, was revealed to be this young human’s father. According to the Avatar comic books, he and his mother, Paz Socorro, slept together despite not being in a relationship. Their relationship was never emphasized nor mentioned in the movies and was just an added detail in the tie-in media. Quaritch was surprised that his son was still alive and tried to bond with him throughout the movie. However, their ideals were too different, hence why he left him at the end, despite saving his life.
Quaritch admits that he isn’t a great father. Throughout, though, the two were able to bond as Spider taught his resurrected father some things to help him survive Pandora, in hopes for him to understand why the Na’vi are worth protecting. Unfortunately, the final confrontation proved otherwise, hence why his son left him behind.
