It’s almost certainly a coincidence, but Netflix has been making plays in the sexually-charged comedy marketplace recently, with Turkey’s You Do You the third to come along and find itself anointed as an instant smash hit in a matter of weeks.

German romp Hard Feelings was more outlandish due to the presence of talking genitalia that would obviously elevate it above realism, while the not entirely self-explanatory The Year I Started Masturbating also got its hands dirty at the upper echelons of the most-watched charts. Move over, serial killer thrillers and monotonous blockbusters; light-hearted lovelorn adventures is the new in thing.

In this instance, Ahsen Eroglu’s Merve is on the cusp of being evicted from her apartment after letting a bohemian lifestyle get the better of her, before she stumbles upon what she believe to be an ingenious idea. Concocting a dating app where people wear masks and let their personality do the talking, a startup savant takes an interest in the concept and offers his assistance.

Needless to say, you know exactly how things are going to pan out from there, not that Netflix’s customer base seems to mind. Per FlixPatrol, You Do You has debuted as the third top-viewed feature on a global scale, having become romantically entangled with the Top 10 in 52 countries around the world.

Cliches are something that infuriate many avid cinephiles, but when it comes to what’s basically the equivalent of comfort food stuffed directly into the eyeballs, few do it much better than Netflix’s ongoing production line of frothy frolics.
