Against all the odds, ‘She-Hulk’ gets defended for doing Daredevil better than the Netflix series

That is one bold defense strategy.

Who’d have thunk it? She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, perhaps the most divisive of all Marvel’s Disney Plus series, getting praised in favor of the jewel of the MCU’s TV crown, Netflix’s Daredevil. But that’s exactly what’s happening, proving just how upside down the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become in recent times.

Former Daredevil stunt performer Chris Brewster has been grabbing headlines for his strong feelings on how Marvel Studios is handling the character of Matt Murdock on Disney Plus, blasting Charlie Cox’s appearance as the hero as a “massive step-down” in comparison to his Netflix adventures, accusing the studio of turning Daredevil “into a cartoon.”

Some fans out there probably agree with what Brewster had to say, but at the same time, She-Hulk apologists have come out of the woodwork to stand up for the Tatiana Maslany vehicle, claiming that it actually improves over Netflix Daredevil in one major way. “No disrespect to Chris,” wrote Twitter user T’Challa Fan, “but She-Hulk actually showcased Daredevil’s acrobatic skills, something the Netflix show lacked.”

As someone who has gone on the record to declare She-Hulk one of the best TV series of 2022, I am certainly here for this take. Those who had a problem with the lighter-hearted portrayal of the Man Without Fear in this series, including his gold and red costume, perhaps missed that She-Hulk was cleverly harking back to DD’s comic book origins, specifically Stan Lee’s depiction of the character in the 1960s. And, as this tweet points out, that includes bringing back the hero’s acrobatic abilities.

Sure, few would argue that She-Hulk is a superior depiction of Daredevil to the Netflix show overall, but not everyone thinks it was the betrayal of the character that Brewster believes it to be. With any luck, Daredevil: Born Again will win over both sets of fans when it eventually arrives in early 2024.
