There are plenty of things that can go wrong while making a movie, and it would appear that virtually every single one of them happened to mystery thriller London Fields, which has to be regarded as one of the most insanely troubled productions from start to finish in Hollywood history.
Director Matthew Cullen called action on the literary adaptation in September of 2013, but it wouldn’t hit theaters until October of 2018, and there was a ridiculous amount of drama between those two points, never mind the fact it scored one of the worst opening weekends for any feature in wide release after bringing in just $169,000, topping out with less than half a million in the bank on an $8 million budget.
There’s also the fact that it holds a zero percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes with none of the 35 reviews having anything positive to say, but if you can believe it, that still isn’t the worst of it after London Fields became the subject of no less than four lawsuits.
Cullen initially sued the producers for fraud, alleging they’d withheld his salary and denied him final cut, before he was countersued for not just over-spending on the budget and over-extending the shooting schedule, but filming a music video for Katy Perry when he was supposed to be in post-production.
Star Amber Heard was also hit with a $10 million lawsuit for breach of contract, but she countersued as well claiming her no-nudity clause was violated. All that for a terrible, terrible film, albeit one that’s remarkably managed to find itself a new crowd on streaming after FlixPatrol revealed London Fields to be one of the most-watched titles on Starz.
