A while back, we reported that Marion Cotillard was to star in A Separation director Asghar Farhadi‘s first French-language feature film. Alas, she has since dropped out of the project, but fans of The Artist will be happy to hear that Berenice Bejo is replacing Cotillard as the lead actress in Farhadi’s film.
Not much else is known about the film, except that it is going to be a “social thriller,” and that Tahar Rahim of The Prophet fame will co-star. The film will start shooting in October, and is expected to be unveiled next spring.
No reason has been given for Cotillard’s departure. However, it seems that she has been working non-stop since her Oscar win, so perhaps she left the project due to scheduling conflicts.
Meanwhile, I’m incredibly excited that Berenice Bejo has found her next project. Although it was Jean Dujardin who won an Academy Award for his role in The Artist, it was actually Bejo’s Peppy Miller that blew me away. I think she has great on-screen presence and wonderful charisma, so I’m definitely looking forward to her performance in Farhadi’s upcoming film.
Speaking of Farhadi, A Separation was by far one of the best films of 2011. It’s one of those movies you can watch over and over again, because everything was so nuanced and intricately woven together. With such an excellent director at the helm and the addition of Bejo to the cast, this movie has just shot atop my to-watch list for 2013.
What do you think? Are you excited to see Farhadi’s new film?
