If you’ve followed Indian music over the last decade, you’ve probably stumbled upon the moniker, Yo Yo Honey Singh. He’s widely known as the guy who brought hits like “Angreji Beat,” “Desi Kalakaar,” and “Lungi Dance” into existence.
Due to his massive popularity, Yo Yo Honey Singh became one of the highest paid musical artists in India. However, at the height of his ever-increasing fame, the “King of Indian Rap” took some time off. Now, what exactly could make one of the most notable hip hop stars in Asia leave the spotlight?
The trials of a superstar
Yo Yo Honey Singh, whose real name is Hirdesh Singh, kicked off his career in the early 2000s, but it wasn’t until 2011 that his music began to gain traction. With his catchy beats, unique style, and energetic performances, he quickly became a household name. And he wasn’t just popular in India – his music traveled far, and Yo Yo Honey Singh became a global sensation.
Around 2014, at the peak of his career, Yo Yo Honey Singh suddenly went off the radar – no new tracks, no public appearances, nothing. Fans were left wondering what had happened to their favorite artist. But it wasn’t until much later that Honey Singh opened up about his absence. He revealed that he had been battling serious health issues, including bipolar disorder and alcoholism. In a 2023 interview with The Bombay Journey, Yo Yo Honey Singh opened up about the pressures of fame, constant scrutiny, and an intense work schedule that had taken a toll on his mental and physical health.
He took the time he needed to heal, both mentally and physically, and in 2018, he made his comeback with the song “Makhna.” The track was an instant hit, reminding everyone that Honey Singh still had it in him. Since his return, Yo Yo Honey Singh has been more cautious about his work and personal life. He released an album, Glory, in August, 2024.
