Sony has announced Total Recall for Blu-ray in December. The film stars Colin Farrell, Jessica Biel, Bryan Cranston and Kate Beckinsale.
Len Wiseman’s Total Recall remake is probably one of the biggest box office failures of the year as it could barely hang on for more than two weeks in theaters. The inflated production budget of $125 million also didn’t help lessen the blow, especially since the film clocked out worldwide with only $177 million.
I’m assuming most simply didn’t want a remake or reboot to the Paul Verhoeven classic. Len Wiseman is also known for adding a generic look and feel to almost anything he touches and Total Recall doesn’t seem to be an exception. Still, the casting of Colin Farrell, Jessica Biel, Kate Beckinsale and even Bryan Cranston should have turned some heads, but instead it mostly drew people farther away.
The upcoming Blu-Ray has promised an extended director’s cut, which might be able to redeem the film, but will most likely just be a last minute attempt and earning a few extra dollars before it’s too late.
Our very own Jonathan Lack had this to say about the film in his review:
Total Recall is nothing more than a lazy, dull, soulless studio effort wrapped up in an enticing sci-fi landscape. Whether you’ve seen the original or not, you’ve seen every single concept, action beat, or character type this film has to offer in dozens of other films, typically done better.
