So far, in Mark Millar’s brief tenure as a creative consultant on Fox’s Marvel projects, he’s been full of information for fans. First, he hinted at a potential X-Men and Fantastic Four crossover. Now, he’s teasing what X-Men: Days Of Future Past will contain.
The film is still over a year and a half away, as Jane Goldman, Simon Kinberg and Matthew Vaughn are currently putting together the screenplay, but if all goes well, this film could redefine the franchise.
In an interview with SFX Millar hinted at what the next X-Men installment will include.
“Vaughn is going for a big sci-fi style thing with X-Men: Days of Future Past… You’ve got robots, you’ve got time travel, you’ve got superheroes – it’s got everything in one film… Cost-wise it’s going to go up, and ambitious-wise it’s gone up. But Vaughn can handle it. Vaughn made Kick-Ass for $28 million…
He also referred to the film as “X-Men meets The Terminator” and said that it’s “no spoiler on [his] part” to say that the film goes into an apocalyptic future.
That sounds like quite a big spoiler to me, but I’m excited that he revealed that information. Fans of the X-Men comics know that the Days of Future Past story deals with a futuristic earth where all mutants are tagged and put in internment camps. Sentinels rule the United States and track down mutants, either bringing them to the camps or killing them.
For those who don’t know, Sentinels are giant mutant-killing robots. They usually are some shade of purple, humanoid in shape, stand about 3 stories tall, and have the ability to fly and sense mutants. They’ve been featured in tons of comics and cartoons, so if you want a refresher, the first few episodes of the 90s cartoon would be a good place to start.
Watching the team battle an army of Sentinels would certainly up the ante of the films, and would be a great way for Fox to attempt to compete with the other large-scale Marvel movies Disney is putting out.
The talk of time travel is also extremely interesting, as that could potentially lead to Cable being featured in the film. He’s a fan favorite, and one of the Marvel characters that definitely needs to be on film. Including him would be a very wise decision by Fox.
X-Men Days Of Future Past is expected to hit theaters in July of 2014.
