It’s been awhile since Michael Fassbender signed on to play the lead character in the video game to film adaptation of Assassin’s Creed. News on the project has been hard to come by over the last few months but now Comic Book Movie reports that the adaptation has found a distributor with 20th Century Fox.

The story follows a man in a dystopian future reliving the memories of his assassin ancestors. Not a bad plot for a movie, when you really think about it. With hot-at-the-moment star Michael Fassbender in the lead role – and also acting as a producer, according to The Playlist – it sounds like the film is ready to get production set up and under way.

The original game company Ubisoft will produce alongside New Regency. New Regency president/CEO Brad Weston had this to say about the proposed adaptation:

“We wanted to do everything we could to secure the rights to ‘Assassin’s Creed,’ which Ubisoft has maintained with such care and quality over the years”

Right.  That doesn’t really tell us much about the film, though, does it?

As yet there is no writer, director or further cast, and it seems to have taken quite awhile to get a distributor and co-producer set up.  Given Hollywood’s track record with video game to film adaptations, I’m just a bit skeptical on this one. Assassin’s Creed has been a successful game, but video games are not always the best source material.

Still, with a star like Michael Fassbender on board, there’s a good chance that this will be successful. We’ll just have to wait and see what sort of director and writer Ubisoft et al get ahold of. That’s always the problem, now isn’t it?

As always, we’ll keep an ear out for casting/directing/writing decisions on Assassin’s Creed as they become available.
