Doctor Who: 50th Anniversary Special Confirmed By BBC

A week ago, Doctor Who turned 49, but fans have already been looking ahead to the 50th anniversary for the past couple of years. Of course, the only plans that have been confirmed is Mark Gatiss' biopic of the creation of the show back in 1963. Now, we finally have some confirmation that there is more happening.

A week ago, Doctor Who turned 49, but fans have already been looking ahead to the 50th anniversary for the past couple of years. Of course, the only plans that have been confirmed is Mark Gatiss’ biopic of the creation of the show back in 1963.

Beyond that, we don’t really know what to expect aside from Steven Moffat‘s (the showrunner) promise of “big plans” for the anniversary. What does that mean? Not sure, but we finally have a proper confirmation that something is indeed happening.

While talking about what to expect in 2013, Danny Cohen (Controller of BBC One), had this to say:

“Drama on BBC One takes another big leap in 2013 in the shape of some major event dramas, including The Village, Ripper Street, Luther, The White Queen and the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special. These shows will bring a rich range of tones and worlds to BBC One’s fiction.”

I suspect this isn’t the only plan for the anniversary, but at least we know that they are definitely planning on doing something. Is it one special episode, or a bunch of episodes collectively called the special? We probably won’t know for a while.

Fans expect past Doctors to return as they have in the past anniversaries. While nothing has been confirmed, it’s a strong possibility that at least one of them will return. I’m personally hoping for David Tennant, simply to see the chemistry between his Doctor and the current Doctor, played by Matt Smith.

The anniversary is still a while away as at the moment, we still have the Christmas special this year, as well as the rest of Series 7 early next year, to look forward to. With a new companion and the current storylines, there’s enough surprises to keep us going till Doctor Who hits the big 50.

What would you like to see for the special? Let us know in the comments.
