Zal Batmanglij returned to Sundance this year with his newest film The East, which he co-wrote with star Brit Marling. So far the thriller has received mostly positive reviews, and now the first trailer for the film has hit the web.
The story centers around a contract worker assigned with the task of infiltrating an anarchist group, which she does, only to find herself falling for its leader and considering joining the group.
The trailer is just about as ominous and tense as possible, yet doesn’t give away a ton about the film. We know that Ellen Page and her gang are ticked off about corporations getting away with crimes, especially environmental ones, and they intend to do something about it. But that’s about all we get.
There is also a strong vigilante feel, with a lot of night-vision shots of the group breaking into houses to exact their justice on those they feel deserve it. Overall, the story sounds very interesting and the film has a solid cast, which should be a recipe for a pretty awesome movie.
The premiere of The East comes on the heels of the announcement that Page will star in the post-apocalyptic film Into The Forest, meaning soon she’ll have yet another intense film on her resume. As much as I enjoy Page in her lighter roles, I think she really shines when she’s in something more serious.
The East stars Marling, Page, Alexander SkarsgÄrd and Patricia Clarkson. A release date has yet to be announced, but the film is expected to hit theaters later this year.
