With the PlayStation 4 rumored to be making its debut at Sony’s mysterious press event on February 20th, it only seems right that Microsoft’s next generation console gets its fair share of rumors and speculation. Concrete information on both systems is few and far between, but it would appears that the newest next-gen Xbox rumors might actually have some weight.
According to a close source to The Verge, the next generation of Microsoft consoles will feature natural language controls, speech-to-text, and even wake on voice. Merely uttering the words, “Xbox on”, will allow users to bring their system to life. The focus of improving voice functionality comes with the hopes that users will be able to naturally interact with the console, and seamlessly use their voices as a powerful way of controlling the device. The newly improved voice recognition will allow a multitude of improved functionality to Microsoft’s console. This may very well contribute to Microsoft’s increasing focus of making the Xbox console an entertainment hub for gamers and families alike.
In addition to the improved voice-functionality, Microsoft’s next-gen Xbox is likely to run a Windows 8 inspired user interface. With Xbox 360’s newest dashboard update already resembling the newest Windows interface it would seem that Microsoft is already taking steps in that direction. Former VP of Windows Sales, Joachim Kempin, spoke with IGN, stating that:
“I think the other thing they will try, there’s no doubt about it, is it’s going to be more Windows 8-like; maybe it even gets a touchscreen, who knows? Most of what’s in there today really is Windows, right? I wouldn’t be surprised if the next round of interface comes even closer to Windows 8 than it is today; maybe it even gets a touchscreen, who knows?”
Considering Windows 8 already has the ability to seamlessly connect users with their Xbox, via Xbox Games, it seems highly probable that Microsoft’s next Xbox might ship with a similar user interface.
