It’s been a busy week for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, with the brand new costume officially revealed and filming getting underway in New York City. With that comes more good news though as today, Chris Cooper joins the film’s huge cast to play the role of Norman Osborn.
It’s no surprise that Webb chose a name we wouldn’t immediately expect to play the character as that’s usually how we feel about his casting choices, especially with the casting of Shailene Woodley in the role of Mary Jane Watson. When you think about it though, Cooper seems like a solid fit and since most of Webb’s casting has worked out pretty well so far, I am certain that Cooper will do a fine job in the role. He looks the part at the very least, but I’ll reserve full judgment until I see some footage.
Being cast so late after everyone else, it could be that he won’t have that big a role in this film when compared to the other characters. In fact, I doubt we’ll see him don the Green Goblin costume in this outing, but at least we’ll get to see his face this time. Plus, we already have enough villains with both Electro and Rhino being played by Jamie Foxx and Paul Giamatti, respectively. If Osborn is indeed a villain, expect him to be the guy pulling the strings from the shadows rather than running out and about in a costume.
However Webb chooses to include him, I’m intrigued to see what both Norman and Harry Osborn’s roles are in the story and to see the Osborns’ overall connection to Peter’s past and his parents, if there is any. It seems Webb is expanding the Spider-Man universe with plenty of new characters and I can’t wait to see how they all fit in.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone and is scheduled to release on May 2nd, 2014.
