Sony Computer Entertainment America released a new gameplay trailer for the PlayStation Network title rain today, officially confirming that the game will be released outside of Japan.

rain, which was first announced back at Gamescom last year, tells the story of a young boy who wakes up one day and sees an invisible girl silhouetted by the falling rain. The boy soon finds that he too as become invisible, and as he chases after the girl he discovers that she is being hunted by “ghostly creatures” who appear in the falling rain. Players will have to move in and out of covered areas to hide the boy’s location and navigate past the strange beasts. “Just like in the real world, what can be seen isn’t everything and using imagination is the only way to reveal the truth.”

The basic elements of rain‘s gameplay involving planning your movements from each covered location, so that the boy can disappear from the view of enemies. Likewise, there will also be times where he will need to step out of cover in order to pick up items to taunt enemies, or draw the monster’s attention. This unique take on stealth gameplay combined with the title’s “artistic approach to narration” is said to create a “sense of fear and excitement” as players explore the “unknown world”.

Sony’s Japan Studio plans to show off rain‘s first live demo this week at GDC, and promises to release more details about the game “very soon”. Hopefully, those details will include a release date positioned in the near future.

Fair warning, the six minute gameplay trailer released today takes us though some the game’s first chapter, titled “The Children and the Night”. Depending on how sensitive you are to spoilers, you may not want to watch the entire video. Check out rain‘s new trailer below, and let us know your thoughts down in the comments.
