The final trailer for Pixar’s prequel, Monsters University, has made its way online and aims to give us an even better look at how our two favorite monsters, James P. Sullivan and Mike Wazowski, met. Considering the first film, Monsters, Inc., hit theatres 12 years ago, it’s about time we get the follow-up. The critical reception for the first film was excellent, as was the box office haul, so quite frankly, it’s surprising that we haven’t seen this prequel sooner.
But, nevertheless, Monsters University is almost here and it looks like the long, long wait was worth it. John Goodman and Billy Crystal have returned to reprise their roles and joining them is an excellent cast of returning faces as well as newcomers like Nathan Fillion and John Krasinski.
Directed by Dan Scanlon, who is making his feature directorial debut, the film will act as a prequel and show us how “how Mike and Sulley overcame their differences and became the best of friends during their days at Monsters University.”
So far, everything we’ve seen from the film looks great. This trailer features some nice animation and a bunch of clever visual gags that should provide for a lot of laughs. Of course, the entertaining chemistry and interplay between Mike and Sulley, that made the first film so enjoyable, is on display here as well.
Overall, this one looks like another hit for Pixar. The animation giant hasn’t been doing too well lately, with films like Brave and Cars 2 failing to make much of a splash. Hopefully Monsters University will give Pixar the boost they need to reclaim the animation throne, which has been seeing some serious competition from other studios lately.
Monsters University is set to be released in theatres on July 12, 2013. Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think.
