Ryan Gosling’s How To Catch A Monster Will Be A Bit Lynchian

How To Catch A Monster. Ryan Gosling's directorial debut which stars everyone he's ever worked with continues to intrigue us with its bonkers storyline and an ever-expanding cast. So far the roster includes Christina Hendricks (who shared screen time with Gosling in Drive), Eva Mendes and Ben Mendelsohn (In The Place Beyond The Pines), and Matt Smith, star of Doctor Who. For those of you out of the loop, How To Make A Monster is set against the "surreal dreamscape of a vanishing city", which sounds utterly terrifying to be honest. The synopsis further reveals: Billy (Hendricks), a single mother of two is swept into a macabre and dark fantasy underworld while her teenage son discovers a secret road leading to an underwater town. Both Billy and Bones must dive deep into the mystery, if their family is to survive. Sounds like The Wizard of Oz rewritten by David Lynch. Speaking of...

Smith spoke with Total Film recently about his experience thus far with Gosling and his monster (ahem) and said that the film does indeed have “a wonderful Lynch-ian quality to it.” Whether or not he said it in the American accent he’ll be adopting for the role is of no consequence whatsoever.

He went on to discuss the unusual casting method that Gosling employed:

“I was in New York and I was about to fly back, and then I got a phone call saying Ryan wanted to meet me and come over. So I read his film and I thought it was brilliant. And then I auditioned and we spent about four hours together doing some stuff, and he filmed it on his iPhone. And that was it. And now I’m going off to shoot it in a couple of weeks.”

With filming set to commence shortly, and a corker of a cast lined up, who else cannot wait to see Ryan Gosling’s Lynchian debut?

How To Catch A Monster is set for release in 2014.
