It looks like this Oscar season is going to be the battle of the princesses as the Naomi Watts-starring biopic Diana may be released by year’s end to be eligible for the 2014 Academy Awards.
After being unveiled this week at Cannes, distributor Entertainment One has picked up the rights for the North American release of Diana. The film, directed by Olivier Hirschbiegel (Downfall) and written by Steven Jeffreys (The Libertine), focuses on the Princess of Wales’ affair with Dr. Hasnat Kahn, which began two years prior to her death in Paris in 1997. Naomi Watts plays Diana in the film with Naveen Andrews (Lost) as Dr. Kahn.
eOne is now eying a late-2013 release date to maximize their Oscar hopes for the film and Watts’ performance. Might Diana also make an appearance at the Toronto International Film Festival? I guess we’ll see.
In any event, it’s going to be a royal-palooza this Oscar season as Watts’ Diana will be going up against Grace Of Monaco, a biopic about Grace Kelly, Hollywood actress turned Princess of Monaco starring Watts’ good friend Nicole Kidman. Grace of Monaco is directed by Olivier Dahan (La Vie en Rose).
