Like most people out there, I consider myself a fan of the Coen Brothers’ work, at least for the most part. They’ve delivered some good to great films in the past, including Raising Arizona, Blood Simple, The Big Lebowski, Burn After Reading, and, of course, what many consider to be their greatest work, Fargo.
There have only been a couple instances in which their films have disappointed me, those two being O Brother, Where Art Thou? and No Country For Old Men. I know, I know, there are some who consider it cinematic blasphemy not to like the latter, but the third act ruined what had been a pretty good film up to that point.
The Oscar-winning duo have already been getting amazing review for their latest work, Inside Llewyn Davis, which premiered earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival. Critics have been calling it “a quiet triumph of a film,” “an impressively nuanced character study,” and “instant A-list Coens; enigmatic, exhilarating, irresistible.” Sounds like they just might have another hit on their hands.
Today, via The Film Stage, we have the latest trailer for the film, which highlights the dour mood and exceptional cast, which includes Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, John Goodman, Garrett Hedlund, Justin Timberlake, and F. Murray Abraham (when was the last time HE was in anything remotely big?)
While Inside Llewyn Davis doesn’t look like much, the Coens have this amazing way of slowly creeping up on you with their films. Their best works come off as strange at first, but by the end, you realize that you’ve had a really good time watching them, even when they’re as enigmatic as Barton Fink. Hopefully their latest project will be just as successful at conveying that bizarre Coen Brothers spirit.
Inside Llewyn Davis hits theaters on December 6th, 2013.
