Awards season is still a few months away, but that hasn’t stopped the studios from churning out trailers for their potential players very early on. We’ve already seen trailers for The Wolf of Wall Street, Captain Phillips, and just today, we saw the first trailer for Saving Mr. Banks.

Now we have another big trailer, this time for the drama Out of the Furnace, starring Christian Bale. Just in case you’re not familiar with the film, a quick synopsis reads as follows: “When Rodney Baze mysteriously disappears and law enforcement fails to follow through, his older brother, Russell, takes matters into his own hands to find justice.”

It sounds a little generic, but I’ll try not to hold that against it. What troubles me though is that, from the trailer, it’s reminding me a lot of Winter’s Bone, what with someone trying to find a family member up in the mountains. I know there will be those who disagree, but I found that to be an extremely overrated film, which makes me hope that this one won’t follow suit.

What should help out quite a bit is the stellar cast, which includes Christian Bale (a great actor, but not deserving of the Oscar he took for his annoying performance in The Fighter), Woody Harrelson (who tends to be an interesting presence in most of his films), Zoe Saldana, Forest Whitaker, Casey Affleck, Sam Shepard and Willem Dafoe. Will they be enough to turn around what looks like a somewhat blah project?

Perhaps. But then you also have the fact that it’s been directed by Scott Cooper, the man who brought us Crazy Heart, which was pretty good, so at least we know he can handle heavy drama, and that’s something that this trailer seems to have in spades.

I know I sound very skeptical at this point, but I’m still more than willing to give it a shot, it’s just not particularly high on my must-see list at the moment.

Out of the Furnace hits theaters on November 27th.
