Today we have a brand new still from one of my most anticipated films of the year, Spike Lee’s upcoming Oldboy remake, which is currently penciled in for an October 25th, 2013 release date. Showing off Josh Brolin wielding a hammer and looking appropriately pissed off, all I can say is that I pity the poor soul who’s on the receiving end of that weapon.
Though I was pretty skeptical at first about this remake, and am still remaining cautiously optimistic, the more I see from it the more I am convinced that Lee’s vision of this Korean classic is going to be a hit. Do I think it will be on the same level as the original? Doubtful. But will it be a commendable remake? I think it might just be.
There’s some serious talent involved here and judging by the footage we’ve seen, it looks like Spike Lee has captured that dark, twisted and unforgiving depiction of violence and revenge that director Chan-wook Park gave us with the original.
That’s actually something I was worried about, that the American remake would skimp out on the darkness and would be watered down. Thankfully, that doesn’t appear to be the case here and it looks like Lee is going all out with this version.
Oldboy stars Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen, Sharlto Copley, Samuel Jackson, Bruce Hornsby and James Ransone. Check out the new photo below and let us know what you think in the comments section.
