As recent horror movies go, the first Insidious was a bright spot, a refreshingly spooky haunted house flick with a talented cast and plenty of jump-out scares. Now, we have two clips and a host of pictures from the upcoming sequel, appropriately titled Insidious: Chapter 2.

Warning: Insidious spoilers ahead.

The first Insidious ended on a cliffhanger, when it was implied that protagonist Josh Lambert (Patrick Wilson) had been possessed by an evil ghost from his past after going into an ethereal realm called The Further to reclaim his kidnapped son (Ty Simpkins). It looks like Insidious: Chapter 2 will centre around that development.

In an interview with the LA Times, director James Wan reported that Insidious: Chapter 2 will feel a little different to the first film:

It’s a direct continuation from the end of the first film, so it’s the same characters, same actors coming back. But where the first movie plays like a classic haunted house film, the second one plays more like a domestic thriller with supernatural elements to it.

The first clip shows Dalton (Simpkins) recounting a creepy night he had to his mother Renai (Rose Byrne).

The second clip shows a blow-up between Renai, who believes that the entities which terrorized her family in the first film are still around, and Josh, who tells her that he just wants to move on.

The film will see the return of the entire team that worked on the first film, including director James Wan, writer Leigh Whannell, and stars Rose Byrne, Patrick Wilson, Ty Simpkins, Barbara Hershey, and Lin Shaye, despite the fact that Shaye’s character was murdered at the conclusion of the first film.

Insidious: Chapter 2 is a “continuation of the first film,” according to Whannell. “It picks up from where the other one left off.  It’s the second half of the first film.”

Insidious: Chapter 2 opens, fittingly, on Friday, September 13th.
