Though you may not be familiar with the name Destin Cretton just yet, he is certainly a director on the rise. He recently released the very well received indie Short Term 12 this past Summer and now, he’s booked his first major studio flick as Variety is reporting that the director will hop on board Lionsgate’s The Glass Castle, which has Jennifer Lawrence set for the lead.
The film will see the Hunger Games star playing a girl using her imagination to deal with her dysfunctional family, which includes an art obsessed mother and an alcoholic father. Based on Jeannette Walls’ novel of the same name, the adaptation was penned by Marti Noxon, with Andrew Lanham being brought on to do rewrites.
I haven’t seen Short Term 12 yet, but with all the positive things I’m hearing about it, seeing that Cretton is now moving onto a big studio flick with Jennifer Lawrence in the lead has me very excited. The Glass Castle sounds like it will deal with some heavy and dark drama, much like Short Term 12 did, so Cretton should be a good fit for the project.
All things considered, this upcoming adaptation sounds like it’s brimming with potential and I’m definitely eager to hear more about it in the coming months. If Cretton can bring on some strong supporting players to surround Jennifer Lawrence with, then this could shape up to be a possible awards contender.
