It’s a good thing the Originals got out of dodge at the end of last season because Silas (Paul Wesley) is shaping up to be a villain like none other on The Vampire Diaries. It’s interesting how the search for the cure has turned into such a colossal mess for Elena (Nina Dobrev) and her friends. And, in an ironic plot twist, the person responsible for awakening Silas, is the one he wants the most – and the one least able to defend herself. Katherine (also Dobrev) sacrificed Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) to feed Silas on the island, loosening his grip on the box containing the cure, and bringing an immortal threat to everyone’s front door; all in a misguided attempt to secure leverage.
Now that Katherine is human, thanks to her doppelganger, she has to rely on the kindness of others to keep her safe. This includes Jeremy, who is not only technically related to her, but she also was responsible for his death several months ago. They are being accompanied by Matt (Zach Roerig), another character that has had his fair share of unfriendly encounters with the former vampire. If that doesn’t make for an awkward protection detail, I don’t know what does.
Unfortunately for Katherine, she’s not exactly high on most people’s priority list given her history of putting herself before anyone else. She only came by this saving grace because Silas was forthright enough with Damon (Ian Somerhalder) to make his demands early on. Keeping her safe is a strategic move, and already proving a difficult task. At least Katherine is smart enough to realize her place in all this.
Silas seems impossible to defeat. He has a wide-range of talents that gives him an advantage over any of the other supernaturals in town. At least Klaus (Joseph Morgan) had some weaknesses that they were able to eventually exploit, Silas doesn’t seem to have any worth noting. He may not be as fast or strong as vampires, but as far as we know, he’s also entirely immortal. You can shoot to kill, but he isn’t going to die no matter where you aim. If anything, it just makes him angrier and more determined.
We’ve learned over the last few seasons of The Vampire Diaries that nature always has a way of creating a loophole in order to restore balance down the line. The Originals were indestructible unless they were stabbed by a stake carved from the same White Oak tree that was used in the potion/spell that created them. You may also remember learning last season that Silas was cursed by a witch. Witches get their powers from nature. Ergo, there must be a way to defeat him. If I had to speculate, it would be that somehow Stefan is tied to that solution, just like Katherine and Elena as doppelgangers were to Klaus and his hybrid curse. The only thing that concerns me is that once Silas finds out how exactly Stefan is his Achilles heel, naturally he’s going to try to kill him. Could The Vampire Diaries survive without one of the Salvatore brothers? I hope we never have to find out.
