It was a pretty big disappointment to hear that George Clooney’s The Monuments Men was not going to be ready on time for its original December release date, but the fact of the matter was, it needed more work. In a way, it was actually a relief that they weren’t going to attempt to rush the film to get it done in time.
The Monuments Men, which tells “the true story of a platoon given the assignment of recovering stolen, priceless artwork from the Nazis,” is almost upon us now and just to make sure you remember that it’s still on the way, the studio has released a whole slew of promotional material, including a “newsreel” trailer, a TV spot, and several new production stills.
The newsreel trailer is just what it sounds like: a trailer made up to look like an old-fashioned newsreel, the kind you’d see before motion pictures in the old days. The TV spot is pretty much what you’d expect too: 30 seconds of footage that quickly gives us a rundown on the plot in an intense manner.
The images here are a particular treat, giving us gorgeous glimpses of the cast, which includes George Clooney, Matt Damon, John Goodman, Bill Murray, Jean Dujardin, and Cate Blanchett. As an added bonus, we’ve even been given the complete listing of the upcoming soundtrack, which will be available to own on February 4th.
Given the film’s original placement, it will be interesting to see if it will be remembered come next awards season. It certainly looks like material that could capture the Academy’s attention, but will its February release hurt its chances in that regard? Before it even gets that far, it’ll still have to stand up to critical scrutiny, which again isn’t far off. Hopefully the wait will have been worth it.
The Monuments Men opens wide on February 7th.
