According to Twitch Film, 20th Century Fox have their eye on Safe House helmer Daniel Espinosa to direct the upcoming Assassin’s Creed film, which currently has Michael Fassbender on board to star and produce. The studio hasn’t confirmed this bit of news and for now it’s just a rumor, but it’s certainly interesting. If you recall, not too long ago both Espinosa and Fassbender were going to make The Outsider together. Unfortunately, that didn’t pan out but perhaps the duo are still eager to work together?
With a 2015 release date already set, this project should start moving ahead very shortly. For now though, the hunt for a director is still on and until we hear otherwise, Espinosa is not confirmed for the job. As always though, once something official comes our way we’ll be sure to let you know.
Personally, I’m not a huge fan of Espinosa’s past work and being a video game adaptation, I’m already a bit wary of this film. That being said, Fassbender’s involvement certainly bodes well for it, and if any film based on a video game is going to turn out to be a quality movie then this one is it.
While it’s true that almost every video game adaptation that Hollywood has put out has been an absolute train wreck, I can’t see Fassbender attaching himself to a project that’s going to bomb. The man is one of the most respected actors of our generation and he certainly has his pick of projects. If he’s choosing to star in and produce Assassin’s Creed then that likely means there’s a very good script here and that he thinks it has a lot of potential.
