New Maleficent Trailer Features Lana Del Rey’s Once Upon A Dream

Lana Del Rey is well on her way to becoming the Kenny Loggins of our time. In 2013 she sang the best song on the soundtrack for Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby, standing far above the other talented performers and lively tracks featured in that film. Now, with the new trailer for Disney's Maleficent, we get our first peek at her low-key cover of "Once Upon A Dream."

Lana Del Rey is well on her way to becoming the Kenny Loggins of our time. In 2013 she sang the best song on the soundtrack for Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, standing far above the other talented performers and lively tracks featured in that film. Now, with the new trailer for Disney’s Maleficent, we get our first peek at her low-key cover of “Once Upon A Dream.”

While some might say this version of the song is rather dreary, I prefer to think of it as a delightfully dark spin on the tune. It’s absolutely perfect in tone for the story of Sleeping Beauty‘s future baddie, yet it still manages to be just as catchy as it is moody. Looks like Del Rey has turned out another solid movie tune, though she’s still got a ways to go before she’s on a “Danger Zone” level.

In terms of the trailer itself, this is a way better look at the film than anything else we’ve seen so far, at least in terms of showing off the titular character and the evil she brings. We actually get to see Angelina Jolie outside the shadows, and every time she speaks she seems just about perfect to play such an iconic villain. The rest of the terror she brings about is just that – terrifying. The movie looks like it’s going to be on a much grander scale than I originally thought, and this trailer does quite a bit to get me excited for it.

Maleficent hits the big screen on May 30th, 2014. It also stars Sharlto Copley, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville.
