Remakes usually aren’t a good idea, unless someone like Steven Spielberg is at the helm, of course. As one of Hollywood’s most trusted and respected directors, I don’t think too many people would have a problem if he wanted to put his own spin on a classic film. It’s a good thing, too, because Deadline is reporting today that Mr. Spielberg has his eye on West Side Story.
While this may seem like a bit of a departure for the director, I would be all for seeing him try his hand at a musical, especially one like this. The project is currently set up at 20th Century Fox and though Spielberg isn’t confirmed to direct just yet, the report says that he’s “interested in making it,” so take that as you will.
While it’s still early days for this one, the idea of Spielberg tackling West Side Story is an intriguing prospect to think about. The original film won 10 Oscars, including Best Picture, so the bar has been set pretty high for a remake. Perhaps that’s why no one has tried to touch the property yet? It’s such a beloved musical that trying to remake it seems like a fool’s errand. However, given West Side Story‘s strong themes of friendship, love and coming of age, I think Spielberg might find that the story is right up his alley.
