Fans of 2012’s breakout musical college comedy Pitch Perfect already know to expect more of the same song and dance when the Elizabeth Banks-directed sequel, Pitch Perfect 2, hits theaters next year. The film will find Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Brittany Snow, Ester Dean, Alexis Knapp, Skyler Astin, Hana Mae Lee and Kelley Jakle reprising their roles, and scribe Kay Cannon is back on script-writing duties. Now, we’ve learned that Adam DeVine, another familiar face, will also be returning for the sequel.
DeVine, who played Bumper Allen, the obnoxious leader of male a capella group the Treblemakers, just signed on to appear as the character in Pitch Perfect 2. Though he only showed up in a few scenes of Pitch Perfect, DeVine left an impact as one of the feel-good comedy’s few truly villainous characters. Given that the first film found Bumper deserting his fellow Treblemakers to take a gig as a back-up singer for John Mayer, it’s currently unclear what role he will play in the follow-up.
Though Banks (making her directorial debut on the film) has essentially locked down the returning cast, there are still some new roles to be cast. Oscar nominee Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit) and Disney star Chrissie Fit both joined the film last week as new members of a capella group the Barden Bellas, and Drake has been long-rumored to play the romantic interest for Wilson’s Fat Amy. It’s safe to say that we’ll be hearing about some more casting scoops before the month is out. After all, Banks is currently in the midst of rehearsals in Baton Rouge, and she is planning to begin production on the sequel within the next few weeks.
Plot details have not been revealed, though fans of the first film can expect a surplus of musical numbers from the film’s talented cast. Pitch Perfect 2 lands in theaters on May 15th, 2015.
