Warner Bros. and Monolith have unveiled an all-new cinematic trailer for their upcoming third-person RPG, Middle-earth: Shadows of Mordor, which provides us with a precious insight into the dark and brooding tale of one ranger of Gondor.
For the game, players will step into the ethereal shoes of Talion, a foreboding ranger-turned-Gravewalker who seeks vengeance against Sauron for slaying his family. Channeling Wraith-like abilities, our spectral protagonist thereby ventures toward Mordor — which, thankfully, isn’t a scorched wasteland at this point in the LOTR canon — and will even encounter Gollum on his journey.
In the build-up to release, Warner Bros. has also trumpeted the game’s intriguing Nemesis System, an engine that will render Middle Earth like never before. In essence, the mechanic will add a sense of permanence to the world of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor by tweaking the reactions of Urks and other in-game races depending on how the character interacts with them.
The publisher also pointed to the game’s dedicated website, which is currently offering players two exclusive runes — namely the Orc Hunter and Palantir Gravewalker — should they choose to register with a Warner Bros. ID.
In terms of the franchise’s overarching canon, though, Monolith’s upcoming title is said to slot between The Hobbit and its next of kin, The Lord of The Rings, on Tolkien’s genre-defining timeline.
Middle-earth: Shadows of Mordor is currently slated for release on October 7th, 2014 and, just like every other game in the pipeline right now, we can expect to learn more details about Talion’s quest for revenge during E3 next week.
