It feels like it’s been an eternity since Terry Gilliam started working on his latest sci-fi venture, philosophical mind-bender The Zero Theorem, so it would be understandable if you, like me, actually forgot that it was still heading to U.S. theaters at some point. This year (though we still don’t know exactly when), the film will finally arrive on the big screen, courtesy of Well Go Entertainment and Amplify, and we’ll find out whether it’s been worth the wait.
The international trailer makes a strong case for the film, highlighting its cast and brain-bending premise. Of course, this is Terry Gilliam we’re talking about, so we always expected that The Zero Theorem would be a bit of an enigma. But with a cast including Christoph Waltz, Matt Damon, Tilda Swinton and David Thewlis, this one is high on our list, regardless of whether we’ll understand what’s going on.
The plot synopsis reads as follows:
The Zero Theorem stars two-time Academy Award winner Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained, Inglorious Basterds) as Qohen Leth, an eccentric and reclusive computer genius plagued with existential angst. Living in isolation in a burnt-out church, Qohen is obsessively working on a mysterious project personally delegated to him by Management (Matt Damon) aimed at discovering the meaning of life – or the lack thereof – once and for all. Increasingly disturbed by unwanted visits from people he doesn’t fully trust, including the flirtatious Bainsley (Mélanie Thierry), Management’s wunderkind son Bob (Lucas Hedges), his unpredictable colleague Joby (David Thewlis), and would-be digital therapist Dr. Shrink-Rom (Tilda Swinton), it’s only when he experiences the power of love and desire that he’s able to understand his own reason for being.
