With two evocative, brilliantly scored trailers, David Fincher’s Gone Girl has convinced me that it is going to be one of the very best thrillers of the year, and so I’m happy to report on every scrap of news about the project, no matter how small. And today, we’ve learned some very exciting news about Gone Girl – namely, that it will open the New York Film Festival this fall. That’s a big honor, and one that cements the film’s status as an awards contender (though, seeing as it was handed the same release date that Gravity got last year, that doesn’t come as a surprise).
Additionally, a new image from the film has landed online, finding protagonist Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) under scrutiny from detectives played by Patrick Fugit and Kim Dickens.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with the source material, a bestselling thriller novel of the same name by Gillian Flynn (who also penned the adaptation), it centers on what happens when Nick’s wife Amy (Rosamund Pike) disappears, leading to a massive, nationwide manhunt. As the evidence mounts against Nick, and his odd behavior is seen as suspicious by police investigating her disappearance, he quickly becomes suspect number one. But as any of Flynn’s many rabid fans will tell you, nothing is as it seems in Gone Girl – which is precisely what makes it such an exciting project for Fincher, who previously delved into the depths of evil in Se7en, Zodiac and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
The cast just gives us more reason to get excited. In addition to Affleck, Pike, Fugit and Dickens, Gone Girl stars Neil Patrick Harris, Tyler Perry, Carrie Coon, Emily Ratajkowski (of “Blurred Lines” fame), Missi Pyle, Boyd Holbrook, Scott McNairy and Casey Wilson.
Gone Girl will baffle investigators in theaters on October 3rd.
