David Fincher is a reliably fascinating and moody filmmaker, so I’m very excited to see what he does with the tangled mystery at the heart of his latest film, thriller Gone Girl. The film, which Gillian Flynn adapted from her own bestseller, seems very likely to be one of this fall’s most potent Oscar contenders. It centers on a missing woman named Amy Dunne (Rosamund Pike), the search for whom turns the country upside down. As her husband Nick (Ben Affleck) searches for any trace of her, the police begin to suspect him of her murder. But as the clues pile up, Nick realizes that nothing in the case of his wife’s disappearance is as it seems.
Two intriguing new posters have just hit the web, playing up the haunting nature of the massive search for Amy. Affleck is still the center of the marketing campaign, which is understandable given that, from Argo to Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, the actor has never been hotter. However, Gone Girl also features a stellar lineup of supporting players, including Neil Patrick Harris, Tyler Perry, Patrick Fugit, Carrie Coon, Kim Dickens, Missi Pyle, Scoot McNairy, Casey Wilson, Emily Ratajkowski and Boyd Holbrook. For me, though, the real draw is going to be watching what Fincher and Flynn, two minds as twisted as they are brilliant, have come up in terms of the story (which Flynn has said deviates from the source material).
Gone Girl opens on October 3rd and will premiere at the New York Film Festival.
On the occasion of his fifth wedding anniversary, Nick Dunne reports that his wife, Amy, has gone missing. Under pressure from the police and a growing media frenzy, Nick’s portrait of a blissful union begins to crumble. Soon his lies, deceits and strange behavior have everyone asking the same dark question: Did Nick Dunne kill his wife?
