Syfy Sets Z Nation For September Premiere

Is AMC’s The Walking Dead about to have some serious competition? Syfy appears to be gunning for that post-apocalyptic ratings juggernaut’s fanbase with its next original series, titled Z Nation. As the title would suggest, the show takes place in a ravaged North America, three years after a zombie virus decimated the population and toppled the government.

The series centers on a small group of survivors who come across the only known human survivor of the plague. Working together, they must transport him across the country, from New York to California, where the last functioning viral lab is waiting on his blood to hopefully find a cure. What the survivors don’t realize is that the man, humanity’s best hope for survival, is harboring dark secrets that could put everything in jeopardy.

It sounds like an interesting concept for a zombie series, as well as one that will lend itself well to serialization on TV. Whether Syfy will be able to provide the requisite grit and gore, however, remains to be seen. The channel is known more for its goofy sci-fi than its grim dramas – but perhaps Z Nation will change that.

Harold Perrineau, Tom Everett Scott, DJ Qualls, Michael Welch, Kellita Smith, Anastasia Baranova, Russell Hodgkinson and Keith Allan all star. Today, Syfy announced that Z Nation will have its premiere on September 10th, at 10 p.m. A 13-episode season has been ordered.

Will you be watching, or are you planning to hold out until The Walking Dead returns in October to get your zombie fix? Let us know below!

Z Nation starts three years after the zombie virus has gutted the country, when a team of everyday heroes must transport the only known survivor of the plague from New York to California, where the last functioning viral lab waits for his blood. Although the antibodies he carries are the world’s last, best hope for a vaccine, he hides a dark secret that threatens them all. With humankind’s survival at stake, the ragtag band embarks on a journey of survival across three thousand miles of rusted-out post-apocalyptic America.
