Things are coming together for QT’s next film Django Unchained, and they’re coming together quickly. The Weinstein Company has North American rights on the film and now Deadline tells us that Sony has agreed to co-finance it and take care of international distribution.

Apparently Sony has eagerly jumped on board since Tarantino is hoping for Will Smith to take the lead role, and Smith has his home at Sony. Christoph Waltz and Samuel L. Jackson are already signed on but Smith is still up in the air. An insider told Deadline that “having Will involved is the key. That’s what the filmmakers want, and they think the best chance of making it happen is at his home studio.” It would be an interesting career choice for Smith and apparently the actor is still unsure as to if he should hop on board.

Casting for other key roles is said to be starting very soon and if Will Smith does join, you can expect to see a couple other big names sign on as well. We’ll keep you posted.
