Casting’s heating up on Shane Black’s upcoming period actioner, The Nice Guys, as Matt Bomer has signed on to the Warner Bros. production.
Co-written by Black and Anthony Bagarozzi, the film harkens to the noirs of times past. Bomer will join Ryan Gosling, who plays Holland March, a troubled private detective in 1970s Los Angeles. When March hooks up with tough guy Jackson Healy – played by Russell Crowe – the pair unite to track down a missing girl and solve the seemingly-unrelated death of a porn star. Somewhere in the mix, Bomer’s character makes an appearance. As yet, we’re not sure who he’s slated to play.
We do know that as well as Gosling and Crowe, he’ll be joining The Leftovers’ Margaret Qualley who’s set to take the female lead. Currently back on set for Magic Mike XXL, Bomer will start shooting after principal photography on the stripper sequel finishes. After his lengthy run on White Collar, and fantastic turn in HBO’s one-off The Normal Heart, it’ll be intriguing to see how his career shapes up as he moves into movies.
The movie marks a bit of a reunion, as Black teams up once more with producer Joel Silver, who he worked with on Lethal Weapon and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Black’s 2005 L.A.-set noir is actually one of my favourite crime capers of all-time. It zooms at a cracking pace, it has a twisting, unconventional plot that you won’t see coming and it’s peppered with his trademark dialogue and self-reflexivity. Plus, it gave Robert Downey Jr. a chance to exercise his quick wit muscles before taking on the role of Iron Man. So, it’s easy to see why I’m incredibly optimistic about this movie.
