Nintendo's upcoming latest firmware update will bring an intriguing new feature to the handheld in Japan, that being the ability to download and use unique themes that will each change the design for the system's main menu. Nintendo’s upcoming latest firmware update will bring an intriguing new feature to the handheld in Japan, that being the ability to download and use unique themes that will each change the design for the system’s main menu. Following in the veins of past home consoles like the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, gamers will be able to select from around 50 unique themes, with the initial Japanese versions costing around 100 to 200 yen each.

The selected themes so far will range from such popular series and exclusives as Monster Hunter and Azure Striker Gunvolt to recent hits like The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds and Animal Crossing: New Leaf. It also goes without saying that there will be many various themes based on numerous Mario characters and games as well.

The update is expected to hit Japan some time in October, and while Nintendo has yet to announce any plans for offering themes in other countries, something like this certainly seems like an easy way to gain a little more cash, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the feature made its way overseas in the future. Some of the themes could possibly be removed or replaced, however, due to Monster Hunter being more of a niche series in North America as well as what look to be some titles that are exclusive to Japan. Those who are curious in seeing how the initial themes will look can see a full list of previews on Nintendo’s Japanese website, though it goes without saying that the text remains in their native language.

We will continue to keep you updated on more 3DS and Nintendo-related news as it drops, so stay tuned.
