For a long time, it almost seemed as though the next sequel to Jurassic Park would never happen. With gradually diminishing returns from the previous two entries into the franchise (The Lost World and Jurassic Park III), prospects for Jurassic World were not the rosiest. But the film is finally going to see the light of day come June 12, and we now have our first glimpse of the ad campaign that will accompany it.
The first Jurassic World poster looks pretty much like the previous posters for Jurassic Park and its sequels: the famous logo, this time stripped of its color, looming at us out of a dark background. With the effective and simple tagline “The Park Is Open,” the poster does what it sets out to: make us excited to get back into that park.
Like the poster, the premise of Jurassic World is similar, but different, to its predecessors. Twenty-two years after Jurassic Park, Isla Nublar is a fully-functioning dinosaur theme park, just like John Hammond always wanted. The story follows Owen (Chris Pratt), a man who works at the park conducting behavioral experiments on velociraptors. When attendance declines, the owners open a new attraction at Jurassic World and…can you see where this is going? I mean, behavioral experiments on raptors? What could possibly go wrong?
According to director Colin Trevorrow (via /Film), the film explores the misuse of technology and the boredom of consumerist culture. Here’s what he said:
What if, despite previous disasters, they built a new biological preserve where you could see dinosaurs walk the earth…and what if people were already kind of over it? We imagined a teenager texting his girlfriend with his back to a T-Rex behind protective glass. For us, that image captured the way much of the audience feels about the movies themselves. “We’ve seen CG dinosaurs. What else you got?” Next year, you’ll see our answer.
Sounds like fun, and perfectly in keeping with the previous “science gone wrong” narratives of the previous films. We might not have Ian Malcolm here to remind us that maybe genetically engineering dinos is not such a good idea, but we will have Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard being pretty; so that’s a plus.
Jurassic World comes to cinemas on June 12. You can check out the latest poster below.
