Just this past weekend, we heard of a new shortlist for the highly-coveted titular role in Marvel’s Doctor Strange. Several big names actors were listed and one of them was Keanu Reeves, who despite not having a hit for a while, is experiencing a bit of a career resurgence now, what with last year’s Man of Tai Chi and his upcoming film, John Wick, both receiving generally positive reviews.
While nothing has been confirmed either way, Reeves has been a fan favorite for the role of Doctor Strange for a while now and there’s a lot of people out there who would love to see him join Marvel’s ever expanding universe. I happen to be one of those people, and so, while talking to the actor today in Toronto, where he was doing press for John Wick, I quickly asked him what the chances are of us seeing him step into the shoes of the Sorcerer Supreme.
Here’s what he said:
“It all depends on the script. I don’t know the Doctor Strange character. It was kind of brought to me in the sense that it’s an interweb idea. There’s nothing real with that. It’s gonna make me go see who Doctor Strange is though.”
It isn’t much to go on, but from what he’s saying it sounds like there’s nothing official happening on the Marvel front. Or at least, not yet. Of course, Reeves could be playing coy, as is usually the case with these kinds of situations, and for all we know he’s already had discussions with the studio. Either way, it’s still interesting that he notes the idea of him playing Doctor Strange is just an “interweb idea.”
At the very least, it’s good to know that Reeves is aware of the fact that people want to see him in the role, meaning that he may choose to actively pursue it, if he hasn’t already.
