Cast your minds back to July, and you may recall Disney dropping the first teaser for its upcoming musical romp, Into The Woods. The anticipation began to mount with stills and posters littering the web, before we had the chance to see the starry cast transformed into their fairy tale icons in the preview. While it was indeed a tease, there was one noticeable name barely given a glanceĀ – Johnny Depp. With the movie’s release a mere two months away now, EW has bombarded newsstands with multiple glossy covers featuring the cast. And yes, there’s one of Monsieur Depp.
In terms of tone, the covers are a smidge baffling when compared to the teaser trailer and earlier stills. Whereas Meryl Streep’s Witch has previously appeared to be the stuff of childhood nightmares, she’s now morphed into a back-combed blue minx. We can only assume this is her alluring side to contrast her wart-faced ‘evil’ visage.
Depp’s character, The Wolf, is shown in his full glory at last for what appears to be an intriguing composite of Gordon Gekko, Zorro and Sulley from Monsters Inc. The remainder of the covers are your standard photoshopped affairs, which you can check out in the gallery below.
Directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago), Into The Woods is a dark-ish romp into a land where the Brothers Grimm’s fairy tale characters all exist. Think of it as a big-screen equivalent of Once Upon A Time; except with a bigger budget, Oscar-winners and loads of singing. Based on the play by Stephen Sondheim, this Disney-fied version will eschew more adult content for a fluffier, family movie as its scheduled to hit cinemas on December 25th.
Into the Woods is a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales in a musical format that follows the classic tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel-all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife, their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch who has put a curse on them.
